Data migration and conversion

Data migration is the process of transferring data between storage types, formats, or computer systems.

Data conversion is the conversion of computer data from one format to another.

What does it mean for your business?

  • Are you moving your e-store from one platform to another?
  • Are you replacing Access database with SQL database?
  • Are you replacing your Excel based accounting with online accounting service?
  • Are you implementing a CRM system?
  • Are you implementing an ERP system?

Anytime when you moving your data from one format to another format, from one system to another system your future success depends of data migration quality. Moving e-store to another platform and losing orders history, implementing CRM system and messing up your client’s phone numbers mean a fault for your business. Migrate all existing data, make correct consolidation of data from different systems, have a clean and correct data and your new system will work well.

Excel Business Intelligence helps you on all data migration process phases:

  • design
  • extraction
  • cleansing
  • load
  • verification

First of all we have to design data migration process, match old data format and new data format, then we have to extract data from existing system (it may be manual data entry if data exists only in printed form), then we clean the data (remove information we do not need anymore, fix mistakes, meet new requirements, then we load data into the new system and finally we have to verify if all data has been migrated and if new system works with new data as expected.

We combine automated data migration (Excel VBA, SQL queries) with manual data processing (cleansing, verification) where it’s not possible to fully automate data migration.

The most common type of data conversion which require a lot of manual work is converting scanned printed documents into database format (e.g. inserting printed directory data into your CRM system so you can contact your clients, inserting old statistical data (existing only in printed form) into your forecasting model and so on.
